Clear your home to-do list · Sussex

Build it with you, not for you.

Build your dream home together, one project at a time (without tearing through your savings)

Buddy up with me and we'll work on it together, crossing things off your home improvement list one at a time.

The home list

3 crossed off. 3 to go. Tick one off.

Sound familiar?

The list gets longer. The quotes get bigger.

The cost of tradespeople has climbed year after year. Getting the home you want now means paying through the nose. Buddy Up Builder makes it affordable again, because you help build your own project.

You help, you saveMost of a project's cost is labour. The more of it you do, the less you pay.
You invest in yourselfEvery job teaches you how to do the next one, so you can take it on yourself.
Someone who caresA builder who wants it done right with you, not done quickly and left.
A community-led skills project
Building real things with real people.

Everyone has the information at their fingertips. What most people don't have is the tools, the know-how, or someone to help with the first step. That first step is what I'm passionate about.

I've got spare time and plenty of know-how. If you've got some free time too, invest it in yourself and your own home.

How it works

Start with a free review.

Before anything gets built, we look at the job together and work out if it's one we can do.

Free

Project review

We look at the job together, at your place or on a video call. You tell me what you want; I tell you what's realistic.

Agree the plan

What we're building, how much you want to help, how long it takes and what it costs. All agreed before we start.

Sort the materials

We agree the list together. You buy direct, I pick them up and bring them, or we arrange a delivery. No markup.

Pick a date and build

We book a weekend day and build it together. Then it's off the list.

Pricing

Simple. The more you help, the less you pay.

There are only two costs: materials and labour. Both are agreed before we start.

MaterialsWe agree what's needed together. You can buy them direct, I can pick them up and bring them, or we arrange a delivery. No markup either way.
LabourA day rate, and it depends on how much you help. When you're working alongside me, I don't need to hire another pair of hands. The less you help, the longer it takes and the more it costs.

About

Hi, I'm Gavin. I love building things with people.

I've spent years crossing things off my own list: a full garden redesign, beds, tables, wardrobes, and a bath and changing unit for our kids. I'm not a trade firm. I'm a practical builder who loves working with his hands and with people.

When I don't already know the answer, I research it properly before we start. I use modern research and AI tools to find the right method, the right materials and the cheapest place to buy them.

Too many people get stung on home projects when they're stuck. I'd rather share what I know, so more people can do more themselves.

An honest price, agreed before we start

Questions

Good to know.

How much does it cost?

It depends on how much you help. We plan the project and the materials together, and materials are separate, at cost. Having me for the day is £250 if you're helping all day. The less you help, the longer it takes me, so the day rate goes up.

What can you do?
  • Inside: wardrobes and fitted wardrobes, shelving and alcove units, kitchen cupboards and fitting, feature lighting, radiators, patching walls, doors and skirting.
  • Outside: fencing and gates, patios and paths, artificial grass, landscaping, BBQ areas, pizza ovens, sheds and storage.
  • Furniture: dining, coffee and side tables, desks, beds and headboards, changing units, benches and garden furniture, in timber or concrete.
  • Repairs: some appliances, broken toys and battery swaps, wobbly or stuck furniture, odd jobs.

Electrical and heating work only where the rules allow. Anything needing a registered electrician or Gas Safe engineer, I'll point you to one.

What if I can't help much?

That's fine. Even holding, carrying and tidying up saves you money. Pick the level that suits you.

When do you work?

Weekends. Outdoor jobs move to the next free weekend if the weather turns.

Who buys the materials?

Whatever suits you. Buy them direct with the list I give you, have me pick them up and bring them, or arrange a delivery. You pay what they cost, with no markup.

What if you don't know how to do something?

I'll say so. Then we research it properly, or I'll point you to the right specialist.
